DIY Fresh Hemp Milk + tips for the best taste

Famously rich in Omega-3’s, hemp seeds make the easiest plant-based milk. No soaking required, just blend with water, strain (if you want to) and you have quick, simple hemp seed milk! But there are a couple things to watch out for to make the best-testing hemp milk which I’ll get into.

I wanted to share this recipe ahead of Vegan MoFo because my theme this year is going to be Vegan Cultured Cheese and one of the recipe that I’m planning uses the leftovers from making hemp milk. It’s going to be a delicious, dreamy Vegan Month of Food.

In preparation for this tutorial, I reached out to Manitoba Harvest, a Canadian producer of hemp foods to see if they wanted to be a part of it. They were kind enough to send me a bag AND are provided one to giveaway! NOTE Manitoba Harvest Giveaway closed on September 5th, 2025.

Tips for Great Tasting Homemade Hemp Seed Milk

Hemp seed milk is nutritious, a source of complete proteins, and all-important omega-3 fatty acids. And it can be very delicious. However, not all hemp milks are made the same. Some can be horribly bitter. If you want to make the best tasting hemp milk, keep the following in mind:

  • hemp seed hulls are bitter! So buy only hulled hemp seeds (also called hemp hearts).
  • hemp seeds’ high fat content makes it vulnerable to rancidity. Always do a sniff test. If the seeds smell rancid, they are. Toss them and get fresh ones.
  • feel free to add flavors! Vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon and other spices can really enhance your homemade plant-based milk. I mean, what’s the point of homemade if you don’t customize it perfectly for your own taste?

Best-Tasting Homemade Hemp Seed Milk

One of the easiest and most nutritious plant milks you can make at home: hemp milk! You don't need to soak the hemp hearts or use a high-speed blender.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup hulled hemp hearts
  • 5 cups water, divided
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch sea salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the all the ingredients in a blender. Blend on high for one to two minutes or until mixture is super smooth.
  2. Strain the hemp milk through a nut milk bag, a jelly bag or a few layers of cheesecloth.
  3. Taste and adjust for sweetness. Serve immediately or store in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. This type of milk can separate over time; just give it a stir before serving.

I love hemp! I’ve been making hemp milk for a while and love that I can vary the sweetener if I use any at all.
You can make hemp ranch dressing by using hemp hearts and water at a 1:1 ratio and adding lemon juice, some garlic and onion powder, salt and fresh herbs like thyme and dill. Anyway, have a great Vegan MoFo and I’ll definitely come back for a visit! 🙂
